Bonny Kate (Hatcher) Whitaker, 101 years old, born September 12, 1922, passed away peacefully at home June 28, 2024. Soon after graduating from Knoxville High School, she married Clarence Lee Whitaker, August 21, 1940. Bonny was a life-long member of Second United Methodist Church, where she served as the administrative secretary for many years. Bonny had a passion for genealogy. She and Clarence spent countless hours researching genealogy at courthouses, cemeteries, and historical societies. Her hobby was quilting until her vision would no long allow it. She then began knitting scarves, giving hundreds to local charities, family, and friends.
Bonny was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Whitaker; son, David Whitaker; parents, George Bert Hatcher and Sallie Elizabeth Thresher Hatcher; siblings, Irene Hatcher, Velma Hatcher, Kenneth Doane Hatcher, Addie Hatcher, Charles Hatcher, Robbie Jean Hatcher, Georgia Hatcher Shipley; son-in-law, Robert (Buddy) Tate.
Bonny is survived by her daughters, Martha Faye Tate and Robbie Embler (Simms); daughter-in-law, Betty Whitaker; grandchildren, Rebecca King (Wayne), Bryan Whitaker (Annie), Jan Wager (Brice), Eric Whitaker, Jason Embler (Becca), Mark Embler (Dana); great-grandchildren, Brad Painter (Mary Kate), Callie Painter, Evyn Edger (Adam), Caitlin Tillman (Brandon), Taylor Leavell (CT), Brendan Whitaker, Lauren Whitaker, Matthew Whitaker, Jack Whitaker, Brooks Embler, Max Embler; great-great-grandchildren, Bennett Edger, Berklee Kate Edger, August Painter, Elliott Painter, Emily Kate Tillman, Henry Tillman, Charlie Leavell, Levi Leavell, Piper Leavell.
A receiving of friends will be held for Bonny on Friday, July 5, 2024 at 5pm at Berry Highland Memorial Funeral Home. A graveside service will occur on Saturday July 6, 2024 at 11am at Berry Highland Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Second United Methodist Church.
