She was my teacher in elementary school and became my favorite teacher, she helped like school at a young age. I had two girls and they started going to elementary school and she became one of their teachers as well. I was so happy to see her again after all those years. I'm so sad she is gone, my condolences to the family and  brandi's family she had made. You will be for ever missed!! Amazing women gone to soon.

I Went to that school for 5 years then left in the middle of the year you will be missed you were my first ever principle that cared about me when I was down and you would make sure I was ok and would not he in trouble alot I was very sad when I found out your death you will be miss. 

  I attended MHES from Kindergarten to 5th grade. I’m in 10th grade now. MHES was an amazing school but the thing that really made it special was the support system and faculty. And one of the most supportive members were Mrs. Self. She had a passion for teaching and working with the kids at the school. She was an amazing leader and she was a joy to be around and talk to. She was so loving, caring, and patient with students and valued her relationship with each and every student. I remember whenever I’d get into trouble during class, Mrs. Self always sat down with me and talked to me about what was going on, she never ever put me into a mindset that I had done something wrong. It was pure support from her. I really enjoyed being around her. Mooreland Heights would not be the same without her. I’m beyond grateful I got to know Mrs. Self. It has been 5 years, and I still haven’t forgot about her. I never ever will. Sending so much love to her family and friends during this time, especially her beautiful and kind daughter Kenzie. She may not be here physically, but her spirit will live on for eternity.

 I have known Brandi from the time she was an Assistant Principal to her  being a Principal. It was a joy working with her. She had a way with the kids and parents. They respected her expectations and strived to be better.  Brandi was a pillar in that community. I will miss her professionalism, her creative problem solving skills, sense of humor and kindness. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and our Mooreland Heights family.

Brandi was such an amazing educator and friend. She always was welcoming and could see your side of a situation and diffuse and come up with a common solution. 
She was the first person to help our daughter Alayna figure out an eye issue and processing problem and helped her figure out the best course of action.  She advocated for kids and was interested and excited for where they were going and what path they were taking in life. She loved her family and was so proud of her school and staff. We miss her ❤️


Brandi will be greatly missed.  I had the privilege of working with Brandi for the last seven years.  Her mind for guiding instruction for students and staff was amazing, but it was her heart that really stood out.  She wanted to build relationships with students, staff, and parents.  She cared deeply for their needs and was constantly looking for ways to support them however she could.  Her smile will always be etched in my mind.  Thank you Brandi for your desire to make the lives of others better.  My thoughts and prayers to the family and to the staff at Mooreland Heights.  

Brandi was by far the most innovative, passionate, intelligent, and dedicated educator I have ever met. She ALWAYS had what was best for children as a priority and followed through on meeting their needs.  The field of education has lost a true treasure!

My thoughts and prayers are with Kenzie who lost her best friend, Cole, just a few years ago and now her best friend and mother.  Prayers go out to the rest of her family and friends as well!  

 I will treasure the memories I have of Brandi and be comforted knowing she is in a better place.



I worked at Mooreland Height from 1999 to 2002, and had the pleasure of knowing Brandi.  Her compassion and dedication for her students was on display every day.  I was lucky to have worked with her, and all these years later remember her fondly.  I am so very sorry for your loss.

I did not have the pleasure to know Brandi, but greatly appreciate educators in developing young minds.  Brandi was certainly in the line of succession of good teachers that followed and then principal.  My formative years were at Mooreland Heights, beginning with 1st grade in 1965, when Jack Nichols was the principal.  I had some great teachers that were very loving and kind, but didn't put up with any nonsense.  They encouraged me and gave me a desire to learn.  Among those were Ms. Gaston, Ms. Anderton, Ms. Howell, Ms. Alexander and Ms. Gervin.  I will be eternally thankful for my good teachers.  Thank you to Brandi, for carrying the torch forward, and blessings to your family.

My kids were at MHE for only a short time, but Mrs. Self made them feel welcome. You could tell how much she loved her job and the kids at the school. It’s a great loss. 

Brandi was an amazing leader.  She made an impact on the teachers and students that she worked with everyday.  She deeply cared for her students at Mooreland Heights Elementary School.  She is a role model for all of us about the importance of teaching our young students to be the best they could be academically, while also reminding us to be kind and care about others.  

Mrs Self will be greatly missed at Mooreland Heights Elementary. It was a pleasure knowing her for the past 5 years. My daughter Addisyn Loy absolutely loved her. She was always there for us for whatever issues we had. She not only served at my babies principle for the past 5 years but she also taught their dad in 4th grade 19 yrs ago. We were all Shocked and deeply saddened when we heard of her passing. Her family and especially her sweet Kenzie are in our prayers. Gone but never fogotten. We love you big ❤️

After getting an administration position, I would call Brandi regularly to not only apologize for being such a difficult employee , but also to ask for advice. I never understood until then the lengths of her humility, patience , generosity, (I could go on). She is irreplaceable. I can’t imagine who I’d be without her. 

Brandi was slow to open her heart to me as a friend and “sister “. But when she did, it was worth the wait. Her smile could light up a room and her loyalty could hold off a pack of wolves.  She will always hold a special place in my heart.

The world has lost an amazing woman. Prayers for healing hearts and understanding. Eternal rest grant unto her oh Lord.

I met Brandi when I served as the Family Resource Center Director for Knox County Schools and added Mooreland Heights to my list of direct service sites.  She was always willing to share information, ask questions, and give input--anything to help her students and her school.   I was delighted when she was selected as Mooreland Height's principal because I knew how invested she was in the school and in the community.  My heart breaks for her husband, daughter, family, and her school family, all of whom meant the world to her.   I'm blessed to have known Brandi, a dedicated educator and caring friend, and am praying for everyone affected by the loss of such a special person.  

I first met Brandi when we invited her to speak at our neighborhood association meeting after she became principal. We adopted Mooreland Heights when the association formed, inviting the principal to speak every August and  to sending them away loaded down with donated supplies. I talked with Brandi on several occasions over the years, the last time being in August when I donated copies of my book to the school library. It's when I took the photo used here. I'm completely overwhelmed and honored that you used it.  Brandi was an incredible educator. A true champion for her students and staff. We need more like her in this world, especially now that she's gone. So sorry for your loss.

I had the pleasure to have Brandi as a student in Elementary and Jr. High School. She was such a pleasure to be around always smiling, fun loving, kind  and helpful in any way. Her classmates loved her as she was so kind to them.

Ms self I am Bella Johnny and Luke’s aunt  we heard the sad news Bella Luke and Johnny miss you especially when they will not see you at school anymore . Bella has mentioned that you died we did not believe her at first but until charity Welch Natalie’s mother told Bella’s mother bout it. You went to the good lord but now you watching over Bella Johnny and Luke. They miss u dearly 

I was blessed to work with Brandi at Mooreland Heights for two years. She was a constant source of support and encouragement to me, and I know many others. I will always be thankful for her guidance at the start of my career and her example. 

 My children had Mrs. Self at Mooreland Heights. We loved her so much, she was such a caring individual with a big heart. I'm so sorry for your loss. Let the lord be with you and Kenzie and the rest of her family through these difficult times. With love The Murray Family.
