

Cates, PFC Charlie JB - of Kodak, born May 27, 1924 departed this life at the age of 86 on August 11, 2010 at U.T. Hospital. Charlie was a World War II veteran who won 5 Bronze Battle Stars. He was of the Baptist faith and was also retired from Swans Bakery. Mr. Cates was preceded in death by wife, Evelyn Mae Harp Cates; second wife, Carolyn Elmo Cates; daughter, Helen Ruth Riley; grandson, Kelmer Gordon Cupp; great grandsons: Jared Douglas Cates, Isaac Andrew Cates and Ethan James Cates; parents, Edgar and Greta Bell Brooks Cates; brother, Holland Howard Cates; and sisters: Irene Cates, Ella Novella Russell and Mary Edna French. He leaves behind 5 children all of Kodak: Ronnie Lynn Cates, James (Jim) Kenneth Cates and wife Josie, Mrs. Wallace (Mary Ann) Yoakum, Mrs. Kelmer (Betty) Cupp, and Shirley Diane Bible; son-in-law, Nelson Riley; 16 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren; sister, Ann Pruitt of Knoxville; brother-in-law, Robert Harp; sister-in-law, Mary MacDonald; and special friends, Billie and Roland Stinnett. Many thanks to all the staff at U.T. Hospital who helped take care of our Dad, and a special thanks to Paul Serrell, M.D. (“The Man” as Charlie would say). The family will receive friends at McCarty-Evergreen Funeral Home on Friday, August 13th from 6-8pm. A celebration of his life will follow at 8pm with Rev. Randy Troutman and Matt Cannon officiating. A graveside service will be held at 11am on Saturday, August 14th at Pollard Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons: Dennis, David, Wayne, Clay Browder, Charlie, Steven, Joe, Josh, Jake, Don, Kenny and Kent.
