

David served in the Air Force during the Vietnam War. He worked as an engineer/draftsman and retired from ABB after 20 years of service and pursued other employment ventures in stained glass at Dollywood and retail sales in various locations in Pigeon Forge, TN. In his spare time David served as Scoutmaster for his son’s Boy Scout troop and Girl Scout troop leader for his 3 daughters. He loved working in his garden, fishing, camping, hiking, being outdoors and working on cars. He was supportive of all the adventures his 4 children pursued and never missed a ball game or music concert. He loved to spend time at the beach or fishing at Chesapeake Bay during the summer. He was always willing to help anyone in need and was a great handyman. He cherished his 7 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren who meant the world to him.
David was preceded in death by his parents Timothy A. and Myrtle E. (Covington) Fitzgerald, sons-in-law; Russell Poston and William Thornton, brother-in-law; James Shelbourne and sister-in-law; Jan Fitzgerald.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years Gracie (Wade) Fitzgerald of Knoxville, daughters and son; Deborah (Scott) Thomas of Sweetwater, Cynthia Thornton of Cosby, Timothy A. (Cathleen) Fitzgerald of Knoxville, and Jennifer (Mark) Cunningham of Knoxville. Grandchildren; Joshua (Skyenne) Thomas of Sweetwater, Kesha (Thomas) Badgett of Sweetwater, Zachary (Amanda) Thornton of Knoxville, Alexander Thornton of Cosby, Hunter (Kardyn) Thornton of Knoxville, Andrew Fitzgerald of Knoxville, Mark Poston of Knoxville, Farris (Brooke) Poston of Knoxville. Great Grandchildren; Easton and Kayce Thomas; Reagan and JT Badgett; Maggie, Matilda and Tommy Thornton; Karma, Riot and Damion Fitzgerald, Lukas Jones, Olivia and Remi Poston, Sophie and Lilly Gosnell, and Greyson Thornton. Sisters; Jeanne Shelbourne, Ruby (Charlie) Aloi, and brother; Barry Fitzgerald all of Richmond. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family is holding a private memorial. The family requests in lieu of flowers memorials be made to the Wounded Warrior Project as he was a big supporter of helping out his fellow veteran friends in need.
