David "Joe" Joseph Hurst, also known as Coach Hurst, passed away at his home in Knoxville, Tennessee on September 7, 2026 at the age of 61. He was born March 25, 1965, in Knoxville to father Walter "Cap" Hurst and mother Betty Lane Hurst.
He attended Rule High School in Knoxville and graduated in 1983, where he was a football player and beloved friend. He then went on to get his Bachelor's Degree in Business from Carson Newman in 1988 and a Master's Degree in Teaching from Carson Newman in 1996. At Carson Newman, he played football and was on two National Championship teams in 1983 and 1984. He taught at South Doyle High School from 1994-2000, where he coached football and track. He transferred to Halls High School in 2000 where he spent the rest of his career teaching. During his time at Halls, he coached football as well as track and field.
Not only was he a coach and teacher, he was a father of two, a son, brother, and friend to many. He was happiest outdoors, challenging himself on hikes and enjoying views from mountaintops when he could. He loved teaching and learning, and was dedicated to personal growth until his last day. He loved his students and athletes, always wanting them to be at their best. He set an example on how to deal with adversity and physical limitations.
He loved spending summers with his children, making memories at Ijams Nature Center and in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. He spent many mornings in the library, looking for books about coaching and encouraging his children to never stop learning. His children will carry a love of nature, learning, and athleticism forever.
He is survived by son Lane Hurst, daughter Alexandria "Lexie" Hurst, son in-law Phillip Durham, brothers Jack (Ingrid) and Shawn, many nieces and nephews, and his beloved caregiver and best friend, Terri Bradley.
He is preceded in death by father Walter "Cap" Hurst, mother Betty Hurst, sister Peggy Hurst Elkins, and brothers Butch, Mike, and Jeff.
To honor him, please feel free to take a walk in the woods, play football with a friend, learn something new, pet a dog, or listen to blues or bluegrass music.
