

DAVID H. SCANLON, III – age 78 of Knoxville, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family at U.T. Medical Center on October 24, 2014. He was the son of the late David H. Scanlon, Jr. and Elizabeth Rowland Scanlon. David was a graduate of Durham High School, class of 1954. He received his BS degree in Forestry from North Carolina State University and his Master’s degree in Forestry at Yale University. He was employed by Firestone Rubber Corporation in Liberia until 1965 then worked for TVA in Norris, TN until retirement. David was an avid hiker. He hiked all the trails in the Smokies and hiked to Mt. LeConte over 900 times. He was an officer in the Great Smoky Mountains Association and Discover Life In America. David was a Master Gardener and a volunteer at Beardsley Community Farm. He was a member of the Sons of the Revolution, East Tennessee Historical Society and Great Smoky Mountains Hiking Club. David is survived by his loving partner, Jewel Tabor; daughters, Lucy Scanlon Crider (Chris) of Sale Creek, TN, Elizabeth Scanlon (Jim Morrison) of Palm Springs, FL; former wife, Lucy Peirce Scanlon; grandsons, Zachary Vaughn, Chattanooga, TN; Jack and Jacob Crider of Sale Creek, TN; sister, Elizabeth Lytton (Tom Kuzenko) of Southport, NC; nephews, Robert Lee Lytton, Jr. of Durham, NC and Joseph M. Lytton of Raleigh, NC. Visitation will be held from 6-8 pm Monday, October 27th at Weaver Funeral Home. Graveside service will be at 11 am Wednesday at Maplewood Cemetery in Durham, NC. A memorial service will be held at Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church on Thursday, October 30th at 7 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Beardsley Community Farm, 1719 Reynolds St. Knoxville, TN 37921.
