Born in Rockwood, Tennessee, Don was raised in Spring City and graduated from high school in Morristown in 1961. He went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Tennessee, where he was a proud member of Sigma Chi fraternity.
A Vietnam War veteran, Don completed Officer Candidate School at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and was commissioned as an officer in 1969. He served with the 101st Airborne Division as a Forward Observer and was deployed to Vietnam in January 1970. On his first day in action, he was shot and wounded, yet courageously returned to duty after recovery. Don later served as an Aerial Observer aboard a Hughes OH-6A helicopter, surviving a crash during his service. His tour concluded in December 1970, and he was honorably discharged, receiving the Purple Heart medal for his bravery.
Don lived a vibrant and full life, marked by adventure, friendship, and generosity. He found joy in the freedom of the open road on his motorcycle and the quiet thrill of flying planes high above the hills he called home. Known affectionately as “Dandy Don,” he was a true gentleman with a big smile, a warm heart, and an open home. His love language was food—he delighted in cooking for family and friends, bringing people together around his table or out on his porch for good conversation and laughter. With a firm handshake and a genuine spirit, Don never met a stranger. His heart was as open as his home; he was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Those who knew him will remember his charm, his generosity, and the joy he found in life’s simple moments.
He was preceded in death by his father, Leland Harris, and his mother, Lois Cash Harris. He is survived by his sister, Joy Harris; daughters, Corley Allison (Stephen) Suttles and Nicole Elizabeth (Talbott) Paynter; and three beloved grandchildren, Bryson Lee Corn, Kyndall Raylee Suttles, and Adeline Mae Paynter. He is also survived by his niece, nephews and their families, whom he dearly loved, as well as his cherished Holston Hills neighbors who meant the world to him.
Don’s life was one of courage, kindness, and connection. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who were lucky enough to know him.
