Donald Eugene Rickels, a beloved brother, uncle, and friend, passed from this world to the next on November 9, 2025. Born on January 5, 1958, to Billy Gene and Wilma Jean “Tootsie” Rickels, Donald entered this world surrounded by love and with a love of life.
As the second of four sons, Donald spent his formative years traveling the globe due to his father’s service in the US Army. His early experiences in diverse locales such as Thailand, Taiwan, and Germany instilled in him a love for travel. The Rickels family eventually settled back in the United States during Donald’s teenage years, where he quickly became known for his popularity and active involvement in high school clubs and sports teams.Donald’s passion for music and leadership continued into his college years, where he performed with a church singing group alongside his brothers. His enthusiasm for travel led him to a lifelong career in the travel industry. He was able to once again travel the world on multiple tours and cruises, many with his beloved mother, Jean.
Family was at the core of Donald’s life. Sundays and holidays were reserved for gatherings at his mother’s home, where laughter and cherished memories were shared over home-cooked meals. His role as "Uncle Don" was one he embraced wholeheartedly, ensuring that occasions like Christmas Eve were magical for his niece and nephews.
Donald was an active member of Church Street United Methodist Church where he sang with the Parish Adult Choir. He was also a member of the Appalachian Equality Chorus and Orison.
Donald is preceded in death by his parents, Billy Gene and Wilma Jean Rickels, and his sister-in-law, Karen Rickels. He leaves behind his brothers and sisters-in-law: Steve (Jodie) Rickels, Richard (Teresa) Rickels, and Greg Rickels. He also leaves a legacy of love with his nieces and nephews: David and Anna Rickels with their daughter Alice, William Rickels, Whitney and Ronnie Hanline with their daughter Hadley, and Derrick and Alli Rickels with their children Colson and Landree. Close friends included Michael Bryan, Roger Hodge, Christopher Sneed, and William Smith.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Church Street United Methodist Church on Sunday, November 23, 2025 at 2:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family and friends kindly request that donations be made to the Church Street UMC Soup Kitchen or the Appalachian Equality Chorus, both causes close to Donald’s heart.
