Elbert Lay, Jr., age 89 of Knoxville, passed away January 3, 2021. He was a devoted, loyal, and loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was a charter member of Wallace Memorial Baptist Church. He was a Veteran of the United States Air Force, serving during the Korean War from 1948 - 1952. He was a third degree mason of Bright Hope Lodge. He worked for Knoxville Utilities Board for Forty years and was in the self-service car wash business with his sons for 35 years. He also was owner of the Handy Dandy Food Market from 1975 - 1989. Preceded in death by parents, Elbert Lay Sr. And Martha Anderson Lay; brothers Clarence, Jennings, Charles Lay; sister, Trula Keck; grandchildren Matthew Lay and Jonathan Lay. Elbert is survived by his loving and devoted wife of sixty-five years, Carrie Marie Lay; sons, Douglas Lay, Steven and wife Sonya Lay; grandchildren, Lindsay Grove, Stephanie Lay; great-grandchildren, Garren Phillips, Gage Grove, Ava Grove, Donavon Wheeler and several nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends Saturday at Weaver’s Chapel from 4:00 - 6:00 pm with the service to follow at 6:00 pm. Close family and friends will meet Sunday at Sherwood Memorial Gardens at 12:45 pm for a 1 pm internment service.
