Evelyn was born in Knoxville, TN, to Verd and Gladys Clowers, and she grew up as one of twelve children in a family of eleven siblings, an early life that shaped the warmth, humor, and resilience she carried forward.
At 16, she met James R Brooks Sr., beginning a story of devotion and family that remained central throughout her life. Together they welcomed two sons and made their home in Knoxville, building a life grounded in love, loyalty, and deep care for one another.
Evelyn found joy in simple, familiar places—flea markets, Saturday thrifting, and trips to Walmart. Yet what made those outings memorable was not the shopping itself, but her generous instinct to think first of others. She delighted in buying for her family and friends, and her affection was most clearly seen in the way she adored her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
A woman of faith, Evelyn attended Grove Heights Baptist Church. Her life was marked by a giving spirit, a bright sense of humor, and a spunky strength that endured through the years. She will be remembered as loving, beautiful in both presence and heart, and quietly steadfast—someone whose kindness was practical, whose laughter was sincere, and whose love was unmistakable.
Evelyn is preceded by her son, Micheal Brooks. She leaves behind to cherish her memory, her son, James Rex Brooks Jr,;
grandchildren, Krista Brooks and Justin Brooks; great grandchildren Cashmier Knoff, DeErik Elder, Landen Brooks and Kylah Brooks, great great grandchildren Kyn’ Nahdi Elder, MaKhari Elder, Delayni Elder and Hazelyn Moneymaker.
Receiving of friends will be held on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, from 12 noon to 1pm with a funeral service to follow at Berry Highland Memorial Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at New Gray Cemetery at 2pm.
