

Dorothy Evelyn Simms Carmichael was born in Lebanon, Tennessee on September 25, 1920 to her parents Will and Elizabeth Simms. There, she met and married Virgil F. Carmichael. Their two sons, Wayne F. Carmichael (wife, Patricia) and Alan L. Carmichael (wife, Olga) who live respectively in Jasper, Georgia and Seymour, Tennessee. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband Virgil Carmichael. She is survived by son Alan and Son Wayne and his Daughters Sarah Carmichael of Dallas, Texas and Amy Carmichael Maresca, her husband, Rob, and their daughters Miller and London of Tucker, Georgia. Evelyn is also survived by her brother, Julian Simms of Marietta, Georgia and her sister Joyce Woodall of Cedar Hill, Tennessee. During her work career she served as an elementary school teacher, school principal, Treasurer, of the Bradley County Nursing Home in Cleveland, Tennessee. She took education courses in London, England, earned a B.S. in Elementary Education from the University of Chattanooga. She taught 4th grade at Black Fox School in Cleveland for 14 years. One of her many talents was sewing – winning the Vogue Magazine state of Tennessee Award for a hand-made woolen suit. She also enjoyed painting and gardening and going to the Keeneland Horse races in Kentucky with her beloved husband. She was a regular attendee of the Military Order of World Wars in Knoxville. Evelyn and Virgil moved to Knoxville, Tennessee in 1995 and shared many happy years there. Evelyn and Virgil were members of the First Baptist Church in downtown Knoxville. In spite of her busy life, Evelyn was first and foremost devoted to her husband and her sons. She was a most positive, happy and optimistic person. The light of her spirit and personality was steady and bright, uplifting all those around her. She will be deeply missed. We all love you, Mom. You were the best mom in the whole world. The family will receive friends on Monday, June 29, 2015 from 1:00 – 2:30 pm with the graveside service to follow at Berry Highland Memorial Funeral home and Cemetery, 5315 Kingston Pike.
