On a brilliant, beautiful day in September, the twenty-fifth, Nineteen Hundred and Thirty-two, a boy was born. When the doctor smacked him, a tale began to be woven, fantastic and funny, encouraging and entertaining, scary and special. We thought it would never end, but at 5:15pm on August 19, 2026, the last of it was told, slipping quietly from us to be continued along Heaven's shore.
Floyd Lee Stevens was born to Minnie Lee (Stubblefield) and Jasper Burl Stevens, who long ago preceded him in death. The oldest of many siblings, he is only survived by brother JB, Jr. He is survived by his sweet wife of 24 years, Mildred. Preceded in death by his precious wife of 43 years, Ina Lou (Berry) Stevens, he was greatly loved and survived by their three children, Brad (Janet) Stevens, Gayle (whose husband Jeff preceded him in death) Edmiston, and Joe (Karen) Stevens. He was Dad and Daddy, Papaw, Uncle Floyd, Papaw Floyd, and brother, by birth, by marriage, and by rebirth in Christ to a host of us who are saddened by his passing, joyful in his Faith, and encouraged in the hope that we will see him again and that he rests and rejoices in the arms of His Savior.
Floyd could tell a story with the best of them, He entertained and terrified scores of nieces and nephews, grandchildren, church kids, scouts, and neighbors, weaving tall tales about Bloody Bones who lived in the Cemetery next door. Long grown into adulthood, his eager listeners would bring up Bloody Bones, hoping for another chilling, hilarious adventure.
He was an interested, encouraging, helpful neighbor to the community, to his community of Faith in churches across the years, but especially to West Lonsdale Baptist Church, where he faithfully attended as long as able, and lived in fellowship with many whom he loved to his last day. Floyd was a man who served his country in time of war, and remained a steadfast patriot. He followed his father into employment, before and after his military service, at the JFG Coffee Company, from which he retired in 1997. He was a legend on the sales route where he served, stocked, and entertained scores of his friends and customers. If you ever went anywhere with Floyd, you would inevitably stand and wait while he talked and laughed, and talked and laughed. with someone we met from his sales route. And almost inevitably, when Mom would challenge him for ignoring introductions, he would respond that he couldn't make introductions because he couldn't remember their names.
While Floyd was a great father, he flourished when he became grandfather to Lauren (Fielden) then shortly after to Joe (Stevens). He really found his legs as Papaw, and the stories multiplied along with the joy of their telling. Years later there came. Allyn (Murphy) and Sydney (Ussery), Whit (Edmiston), Perry (Stevens), and great-grandkids Joshua, Jackson, Peyton, Georgia, Hattie. Eleanor, Jane, Leelynn, Nico, Oliver, Prewitt, Walt, and Lumi. His stories will continue in their memories, told and retold, spun and embellished, for succeeding generations.
There will be a visitation at Weaver Funeral Home on Monday from 5-7 pm with the service to follow at 7 pm. Rev. Jeff Stevens officiating.Family and friends will meet Tuesday at Sherwood Memorial Gardens for an 11:00 am entombment. Condolences are welcome at weaverfuneralservices.com.
