George Washington Waggoner

George Washington Waggoner, age 91, passed away on September 3, 2023. He was born on February 22, 1932 in Knoxville, Tennessee and was raised in Marble City. He was a 1950 graduate of Bearden High School where he played football and baseball. He served in the United States Air Force (1951–1955) where he attained the rank of A/1C. While stationed in Fairbanks, Alaska, he played baseball for the Eielson Air Force base team.

George attended the University of Tennessee. He was a lifelong Vol sports fan and was also a lifelong history buff, and could discuss either subject at length and in detail.

George was a letter carrier for the US Postal Service for over 30 years. Upon his retirement, he pursued his hobbies of golf, bowling, tennis, and gardening with a vengeance.

Everyone who met George just loved him. He had a heart of gold and a smile that would melt your heart. He was a beloved son, brother and uncle. He was preceded in death by his father, Bernard L. Waggoner Sr., and mother, Mae Franklin Waggoner, (for whom, he cared for in their declining years), brothers B.L. (Beefy), Kenny, and Bill, niece Donna, and nephew Greg.

He is survived by Norma Williams, his loving partner of 23 years, nephew Bobby and his wife Kathryn Waggoner, niece Brenda Waggoner, sister-in-law, Mary Waggoner; other nieces and nephews, Barney, Penny, Jeff, Frank, Beverly, Amy, Bill, as well as many great nieces and nephews.

The family would like to express gratitude for the care and compassion George received from the staff at the Ben Atchley State Veterans Home - Special thanks to nurses, Mike, Christina, Debbie, and Leslie.

Thank you to Odell Carter and Terry Henry for being such good friends and watching after George when his family was away. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the activity department or the physical therapy department at the Ben Atchley State Veterans Home.

Graveside service will be held at East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery, John Sevier Hwy. on Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at 2pm.
