It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Gerard Joseph Paterno III, age 60, of Knoxville, Tennessee, who departed this life on Monday, August 4, 2025, surrounded by the love of his devoted wife at their family home.
Gerard was the embodiment of dedication to family—a man whose love knew no bounds. His commitment to his loved ones was so profound that he had the honor of helping deliver both of his beloved sons, Andrew and Micheal, welcoming them into the world with his own hands. These tender moments exemplified the depth of his devotion that would define his entire life.
A scholar at heart, Gerard pursued pre-law studies at Herbert H. Lehman College, where he discovered his passion for jurisprudence. His affinity for family law led him to become a dedicated volunteer child advocate with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), where he selflessly championed the rights and welfare of children in need. Through this noble work, Gerard touched countless young lives and left an indelible mark on his community.
Gerard's interests were as rich and varied as his generous spirit. He was a distinguished Civil War history enthusiast, possessing an encyclopedic knowledge that he loved sharing with anyone who would listen. His evenings were often spent immersed in classic black and white cinema or turning the pages of a Stephen King novel. He had a particular fondness for mafia films and could discuss the intricacies of these stories for hours. In the kitchen, Gerard was renowned for his culinary skills, especially his love of preparing pasta dishes and baking his legendary double-stuffed chocolate chip cookies that became the stuff of family legend. Those who knew Gerard will forever remember his radiant smile that could brighten any room and his warm, infectious laughter that drew people to him like a magnet.
Gerard was preceded in death by his beloved grandparents, Gerald Calabrese and Julia; parents, Gerard "Jerry" Joseph Paterno Jr. and Emily; brother-in-law, Louis Enrique Orengo; and dogs Max, Biscuit ,and Rocky.
Gerard's legacy of love continues through those he leaves behind: his devoted wife and constant companion, Maria Carmen Paterno, who stood by his side with unwavering dedication; his beloved sons, Andrew Gerard Paterno, Micheal Douglas Paterno and wife Meghan Brigid Paterno; his sister, Janet Lee Shaw, and her husband Marc Lloyd Shaw, who provided endless support and love throughout his life. While Gerard had no biological brothers, he was blessed with a brotherhood of choice—Paris, Tom, Leon, and Kevin—men who stood with him through life's journey and whom he proudly called his brothers. His love extends to his nephews and godsons, Lucas G.W. Shaw, and Christian Louis Del Nodal, who held special places in his heart; and his faithful canine companion, Elvis Presley Paterno, who provided comfort and companionship through all seasons of life.
Family and friends are invited to gather in the celebration of Gerard's remarkable life and enduring legacy at Berry Funeral Home, located at 3704 Chapman Highway, Knoxville, TN 37920, with a visitation to be held on Saturday, August 9, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
