Glenn Newton Pruitt

Glenn Newton Pruitt was born in Knoxville, TN at St. Mary’s Hospital on October 9, 1931 to Omer Henry and Anna Mynatt Pruitt. He continued his journey to the hereafter on Friday, January 13 after a relatively brief illness. He attended Washington Pike United Methodist Church. After graduating from Central High School in 1950, he furthered his education at the University of Tennessee. There he met and married Barbara Bayless. They were married for 39 years until her death in 1996. Glenn graduated in the ROTC program and served in the United States Air Force, serving a year in Korea. He retired as a Captain and returned to UT where he completed a M.S. degree in Geology. His first job was with TVA, followed by a Senior Geologist position at Lambert Brothers and later Vulcan Materials. He also worked for the State of Tennessee, Solid Waste Management, Advanced Sciences and Law Engineering. He formed and cherished many friendships during the course of his life. His passions included hunting, hiking the Great Smoky Mountains, traveling, poetry and music. In 1999, he met and married Elizabeth Bailey Griffin. They attended grade school together and were fortunate to meet later in life and enjoy many happy times.

He is preceded in death by parents Omer and Anna Pruitt; wife Barbara Bayless Pruitt. He is survived by wife Elizabeth Bailey Pruitt; sister Barbara Pruitt Smith; his beloved children Jonathan Pruitt; Suzanne Pruitt Ryan and husband Paul; extended family and many dear friends. Burial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 21, at Sherwood Memorial Gardens located at 3176 Airport Highway in Alcoa. Pastor Rick Phipps is officiating. A celebration of Glenn’s life will follow from 12:30-3:30 p.m. the same day at Bridgewater Place, 205 Bridgewater Road, Knoxville, TN 37923.
