Howard Clayton was born to Billy and Ora Lee in Athens, TN. After his mother died, he lived with grandparents until Billy married Mabelle and then grew up with Trula, Bleka, Bud and Merle. He attended North City School, played basketball, worked at home and surrounding mills, and attended the Baptist church. As a teenager, he became a Christian, loved Southern Gospel and attended Woodward Church of God. He joined the army in 1951 constructing communication lines and witnessing nuclear testing in New Mexico. When discharged, he and Merle moved to Detroit where Bleka lived. He worked at automotive plants, Montgomery Ward and Sears. He married Anna Rappa and had two sons, Dan and Tim. They attended Ferndale Church where he was Sunday School teacher and took Dan’s class to Tiger games. In 1968, his family moved to Knoxville working at Merle’s store and Sears. The family attended 8th Avenue Church (later Dutch Valley) where he served as Sunday School teacher, Superintendent and Councilman. After many trips to doctors and hospitals, his wife died in 1975 but continued taking his youngest son to church on Sundays and through the week left work to see if he made it home from school. Later he married Wanda Hale who had two children, Harlan and Denise. He retired from Sears in 1991 moving to Chattanooga to work at Harlan’s office. He attended North Cleveland helping Denise with children’s church and later worked at Dream Big. He spent time working in the yard, gardening, walking at the mall and watching the Braves surrounded by pictures of grandchildren Dene, Lisa, Aaron, and Matt and great grandchildren Emily, Easton, Harper, Charlie, Olivia and Addie. Later, he went to the grocery store and picked up medical supplies helping Wanda take care of Denise. When he could no longer help others or himself, Wanda took care of him until he moved into Ascension Living cared for by their staff until his death.
For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.1 Co 15:22
