

Jackie Wayland Fortune, age 81, passed away on July 13, 2017. He was a long standing member of Central Baptist Church of Bearden and was recently attending Fellowship Church. Jackie was a proud 1953 graduate of Laurel Hill School in Laurel Hill, Florida where he was Salutatorian of his graduating class. He then matriculated to The Florida State University and graduated in 1957 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Insurance. He was a performer in the FSU Flying High Circus, the only all student collegiate circus, where he made many lifelong friends. He performed along with his two brothers who were affectionately known as, “the Fortune Boys.” He was the 1957 recipient of the Gil Aldridge Memorial Award for Outstanding Circus Performer. He was a 1962 graduate of the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary where he was awarded a Master Degree in Divinity and a Master Degree in Religious Education. During this time he met the soon to be love of his life, Faye. They were married in 1962 and were inseparable for 54 years. He served as Director of the Murray State University Baptist Student Union for 5 years and then became an underwriter with Farmers Insurance Group in Colorado Springs, Colorado, during which time he received the Edward Rochie Hardey Memorial Award from The Insurance Institute of America for the most distinguished graduate of the year. They then moved to Knoxville, and he was an agent with State Farm Insurance Company for 29 years. Jackie was preceded in death by parents, M.A. and Eunice Fortune, brother and sister-in-law, Johnny and Faith Fortune. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Faye Ownby Fortune; son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Lisa Fortune; daughter, Felicia Fortune; brother and sister-in-law, Jerry and Mary Anne Fortune; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Gary and Carolyn Ownby; step-grandchildren, Samantha Biggs and Beau Biggs; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. The family will hold a private service followed by internment at Rocky Hill Cemetery.
