Jackie was born in San Francisco, California to Jack and Dorothy (Robbins) Bounds on August 24, 1945. Jackie spent her childhood mostly in Knoxville, Tennessee, minus two years when her family moved back to California and lived in San Diego, where her father was stationed in the Navy. A graduate of Fulton High School, Jackie attended Mars Hill College in North Carolina where she met her husband, Ray, in French class. Jackie ran into Ray again unexpectedly while doing her student teaching in North Carolina. Ray asked if he could show her around Charlotte, and that first date turned into many more, leading to their engagement and marriage on August 12th, 1967, and ultimately a ministry partnership of over 56 years. Jackie obtained a Master in Education from Indiana State University while Ray attended seminary, and taught elementary and preschool-aged children for over 30 years.
Jackie was a builder of relationships, an intentional listener, and an encouraging friend. She took great joy in learning about people, their families, and their lives—and she maintained lasting connections through notes, letters, calls, and visits. These qualities made others love her deeply, and made her an amazing partner in ministry to Ray. In their lifetime they spent 47 years in five churches and have maintained long term friendships in every place they served. Jackie often hosted people in her home and loved planning meals and having company.
In 2017, after retiring, Jackie moved, with Ray, to Tennessee and joined the fellowship of Dixie Lee Baptist Church, where Jackie continued relationship building and made many special, deep friendships very quickly. She loved her Sunday School class, teaching in Vacation Bible School and AWANA, and singing in the choir.
Jackie’s greatest love was her family and she treasured time with her extended family, siblings, three daughters, and ten grandchildren. Spending time making memories by hosting family gatherings, taking trips, planning celebrations, and sometimes simply sharing Sunday meals in the “big room” brought her great joy. Her laughter and smile will be greatly missed by her family, but her spirit remains an undeniable influence each member will carry through life.
Jackie is survived by her husband Ray; her daughters Kara Davis (John), Karma Scardino (Mark) and Ashleigh Lucas (Ryan); her sister Sylvia Phelps and brothers Duane Bounds (Ellen) and Timothy Bounds (Charlotte); sister-in law Susan Stewart (Court Walters); ten grandchildren: Samuel Scardino, Jonah Davis, Marci Scardino, Wyatt Davis, Sophia Scardino, Maggi Scardino, Molly Lucas, Jack Lucas, Teddy Lucas and Daisy Lucas; as well as many special cousins, nieces, and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents Jack and Dot Bounds, her middle brother Phillip Mark Bounds, and her brother-in-law Richard W. Phelps, Jr.
