Buckwheat founded Seymour Heating and Air Conditioning, and served the needs of Seymour and surrounding areas for many years. He was also one of the early members of Seymour Volunteer Fire Department where he served for well over a decade. His efforts were recognized by his fellow firemen when he was named Firefighter of the Year. He joined Sevier County Sherriff’s Department, furthering his contribution to the Sevier County community. He served in both full time and reserve roles spanning 20+ years. He was one of the oldest to attend his police academy class but excelled and was a skilled marksman.
He appreciated the simple things in life . . . feeling the sun on his skin, watching westerns, playing cards with his “card buddies”, peanut butter (He bought it in bulk!), fast cars, and being able to help others.
Buckwheat was predeceased by his son, James “Jimmy” E. Houser, Jr.; his parents, George and Lucille; brothers: Al, George, Joe and Lee Roy Houser as well as sisters: Ruby Powers, Willie Tullock, Evelyn Baker, and June Haggard. He is survived by his daughter, Kathy Mink, and husband, Allan and grandchildren: A.J. and Makensie Mink; son, James E. “Ed” Coffman, and wife, Kathleen and grandchildren: Alex, Taylor and Jordan Coffman and Billy and Nick Bartus; brothers: Harold and wife, Bonnie; Ray and wife, Donna; sisters: Lois Bunch and Dot Chapman as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
A very special thank you to Christy Porterfield and Donna Houser as well as the staff from Covenant HomeCare and Hospice.
