January 20, 1954 – April 12, 2026
James Alexander Marcum, 72, passed away peacefully at his home on April 12, 2026, after a life defined by service, loyalty, and a passion for the open road.
A proud resident of Knoxville, Tennessee, James devoted more than 30 years of his life to the Knoxville Police Department as an investigator, earning the respect of colleagues and the community he worked tirelessly to protect. His dedication to justice was matched only by his love for the things that brought him joy — German Shepherds, Jeeps, motorcycles, ham radio (N4QLN), and anything else with a motor that could be tinkered with or taken for a ride.
James was preceded in death by his father, David Marcum Sr., his mother, Helen Marcum, and his brother, David Marcum Jr. He is survived by his nephews Michael Marcum (Crystal, Karissa, Zoe, and Seth), Stephen Marcum, and Chris Marcum, as well as his cherished friends Kelly Lane, David Oglesby, and Frank Ambrister — people who knew him well.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made in James's memory to Young-Williams Animal Center, a cause that reflects his lifelong love of animals. Donations may be made at https://www.young-williams.org/support/one-time/
A receiving of friends and family will be held on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Berry Funeral Home, 3704 Chapman Highway, Knoxville, TN 37920.
He kept the peace. He loved his dogs. He lived on his own terms.
