Janell Cecil

Janell Cecil, born July 8, 1954, in Kansas City, Missouri, was the eldest of four children of John and Joan Kolesar. From an early age, she demonstrated the discipline, compassion, and sense of responsibility that would define her life. Inspired by her aunt, Janell pursued a career in nursing, embarking on a path of service and leadership that spanned decades and touched countless lives.

In 1989, Janell married William Cecil, and together they built a loving family, raising three children: Christopher, Megan, and Lauren. While balancing the demands of family and a full-time career, Janell earned her master’s degree in nursing, reflecting her unwavering commitment to personal and professional growth. She was also a proud and devoted grandmother to Brooks, Ellie, Jordan, and Madison.

Janell’s distinguished career in nursing leadership included numerous senior roles across Knoxville, Memphis, and Kansas City. She ultimately served as Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer at the University of Tennessee Medical Center. Among her many accomplishments, she played a pivotal role in achieving Magnet designation, a national recognition of nursing excellence. Throughout her career, she was known for her professionalism, clarity, integrity, and ability to inspire and mentor others.

Beyond her professional achievements, Janell was deeply committed to her family and community. She will be remembered for her warmth, strength, and steadfast dedication to those she loved.

Janell Cecil leaves a lasting legacy of leadership, compassion, and service, reflected both in the family she cherished and the many lives she influenced throughout her remarkable career.

A Celebration of Janell's life will be held on Sunday, April 12, 2026, 2:00pm at Berry Highland Memorial Funeral Home with receiving of friends and family to follow.
