Janet Guthrie Young, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, artist, and faithful servant of Christ, passed away peacefully at UT Medical Center Wednesday, July 2, 2025, surrounded by her family.
Born in Nashville, Tennessee, she moved to Knoxville at the age of six, and most recently resided in Lenoir City. She was a dedicated member of Central Baptist Church of Bearden since 1956, where she formed close bonds with several pastors including Dr. Henry Childs, Dr. Larry Fields, Dr. Bill Bruster and Dr. Jesse Fletcher of First Baptist Church of Knoxville.
A graduate of Bearden High School, she continued her education at the University of Tennessee, earning a degree in elementary education. During her college years, she proudly served as a majorette with the Pride of the Southland Band.
She went on to have a fulfilling career as an educator, teaching at Farragut Primary School and Karns Middle School. After retirement, she remained active in the community—leading Bible studies for high school girls, teaching summer art and baton classes, and continuing to share her talents as an accomplished artist, painting both murals and canvas works that reflected her faith and creativity.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Joan Guthrie; her brother, Joe Guthrie; and her brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Dianna Reynolds.
She is survived by her loving husband of 55 years, Bill Young; daughters, Eileen Boroughs (Jon) and Anne Thomas (Kevin); grandchildren, Isaak Bing, Jonah Thomas, Billy Boroughs, and Bridgette Thomas. She is also survived by her siblings, Johnny Guthrie (Robin), Janie Wellman (Rod), Jeanie Smith (Wayne), Jim Guthrie (Laura) and Sallie Guthrie; several nieces and nephews.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to her caregivers Jennifer McQuilkin, Dr. Staci Stalcup, Phyllis Johnson, Dr. Jim Coffield, and the compassionate staff at UT Medical Center, especially hospice, for their excellent care.
A receiving of friends will be held on Monday, July 7, 2025, at 10:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at 11:30 AM at Central Baptist Church of Bearden. A graveside service will follow at 1:00 PM at Berry Highland Memorial Cemetery.
