Born and raised in East Tennessee, Janice graduated from Maryville High School in 1949. She went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from East Tennessee State University and later received her Master’s degree from Georgia State University.
A passionate and dedicated educator, Janice taught school for over 40 years in both Tennessee and Georgia. Even after retirement, her commitment to education continued through her work teaching GED classes in Tennessee prisons—helping others find new paths forward through learning.
A 50-year cancer survivor, Janice lived life with remarkable strength, faith, and optimism. She was an avid traveler who explored many corners of the world, yet always cherished the time spent with her beloved family and friends the most.
Her kindness, wisdom, and warmth touched countless lives and left a legacy of love, resilience, and service.
Janice was preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Faye Vesser; brothers, Tom and Frank Vesser; and husbands, Dixie Messer and Hubert Sparkman.
She is survived by her son, David Messer; her sister and brother-in-law, Sara and Glen Spangler; several grandchildren, nieces, and nephews—each of whom held a special place in her heart.
The family will honor her wishes and no services will be held.
