With profound sadness and grief, the Frost family announces the passing of James (Jim) Frost. Jim, a man of unwavering dedication to helping others, was born on December 3, 1948, and his soul passed to Jesus on July 4, 2024. He was a devoted husband to Wanda Frost for 57 years, a uniquely wonderful, wise, and caring father to Toby (Chad) Frost and his wife Camilla, and an uncommonly patient, kind, and unconditionally loving grandfather to his grandchildren Conner, Abbey, Asher, and Ari Frost.
Jim, born in Harriman, TN, to Jesse and Hazel Frost, was the youngest of 11 brothers and sisters, all of whom predeceased him. In the summer of 1967, Jim joined the US Army and was selected for the Hawk Missile School in El Paso, TX. His exceptional skills and leadership were evident as he scored the highest in his class and was promoted to SPC 5 within nine months of joining the Army. His contributions were significant, and as the original Hawk missiles were beginning to be removed from service, he was selected to be reassigned to develop the Improved HAWK or I-HAWK. Jim was deployed to Butzbach, Germany, where he was promoted to Staff Sergeant E6 at 23.
Jim left Germany, enrolled at Tennessee Tech, and earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1976. He then completed the Officer Indoctrination Course in February 1977 and the Civil Engineer Corps Officer Training by June of that year. The US Navy selected him to attend the University of South Carolina in 1980, where he obtained a Master of Science in Civil Engineering in 1981. Before he retired from the Navy in 1990, he earned two Navy Commendation Medals, a Meritorious Unit Medal, two Good Conduct awards, a Special Ops Service Medal, two Navy “E” awards, a National Defense Service Medal, and many others.
After retiring from the Navy, Jim worked in environmental engineering and eventually moved to the IT sector in 1996, becoming the CIO of a large corporation. In 2014, he founded National Rx and worked with licensed pharmacists to open a pharmacy dedicated to helping people withdraw from opioids. He helped many people stop opioid use and encouraged their continued participation in avoidance programs.
Jim lived his life in service. He served our country, his community, and his family, and, as he would phrase it, most importantly, he did his best to serve our Lord. We will honor his life on Friday, July 12, 2024, at Berry Highland West, 9913 Sherrill Blvd, Knoxville, TN 37932. Visitation will begin at noon, with a funeral service at 2 p.m., and entombment with military honors will follow.
