John H. Dean passed away on February 23, 2025, in Knoxville, Tennessee, at the age of 83. Born on November 19, 1941, in Knoxville, John’s life took him across various places he called home, including Florida, Nicaragua, Mississippi, and Louisiana but he always returned back home.
John had a deep love for the water. Whether it was the vast ocean or the serene beauty of lakes, he found joy and peace in being near the water. Boats were a particular passion of his, as were cars—both symbols of adventure and freedom that reflected his spirit.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Carlisle and Lucile Dean and sister, Jane Dean. He is survived by his daughters: Kristin "Michelle" Dean; Laura "Boo" Dean Ellis (Fred); and Meredith Dean Smith (Joseph Brickzin); mother of his children, Martha Dean. Poppy's legacy continues through his beloved granddaughters: Ella Baker, Gracyn Smith, and "Ray Ray" Ellis. He was Poppy the Great to Oliver Beaudette, his great grandson, before his passing. He also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to Parkwest Hospital, who in his final days treated him with kindness, care and dignity.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, March 7, 2025 at 1pm at Berry Highland Memorial Cemetery.
