JOHN WILLIAM HORTON - Was born on January 20, 1927 in Knoxville, Tn. He was preceded in death by his first wife Nadine Talley Horton, his parents John Franklin and Nora Hammond Horton, sisters, Louise Watson, Frances Moore, Mildred Ward, Betty Reed and Mary Lynn Beale. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Nancy Cook Horton; Son, Dr. Steven M. Horton and wife Ann; Caren Cook Hill; Cheryl Cook Gilbert (Joe); five Grandchildren, Matthew Horton; Emily Horton Hawkins, (Darren); Larissa Hill; Alex Hill; Laison Gilbert; great granddaughter Stella Hawkins; Brother, Rev. James F. Horton of Birmingham, Alabama; Sister, Ruth Ann Scarbrough of Knoxville; and several nieces and nephews. John served in the Navy in World War II and returned to Knoxville to attend the University of Tennessee. He worked full time at the United States Postal Service where he retired after 42 years. At the time of retirement, he was serving in the position of Area Manager. He had also served as Manager of Burlington, Fountain City, Lonsdale and West Knoxville Postal Stations. He served as Treasurer of Knoxville High School Class of 1945, since they began having their reunions and enjoyed many friends and memories. He was also a 50 year plus member of the Bright Hope Masonic Lodge Number 557 F & A.M. He was a member of Church Street United Methodist Church and a member of Murphy Builder’s Sunday School Class where he had been active for many years. Murphy Builders will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family appreciates the care and concern of the NCCU Staff of UT Medical Center and the loving care of the staff at Tennova Residential Hospice. Rev. Andy Ferguson, Rev. Darryll Rasnake and Rev. Cabel Trent officiating. Family will receive friends on Thursday, February 28, 2013 from 1-2:30 PM at Church Street United Methodist Church with service to follow at 2:30 PM. Interment will be at Highland Memorial Cemetery Thursday, February 28, 2013 at 4 PM.
