John Walter Montgomery, age 87, moved to his eternal home on Friday, August 10, 2018. John was born December 19, 1930, in Knoxville and was a class of 1948 graduate of Knoxville High School. He really enjoyed his many friends, the Junior Smoky Mountain Hiking Club, and his scout troop adventures. He was a 1952 graduate of the University of Tennessee where he majored in Business, was a Phi Gam, and president of the student card section at football games. After graduating he served in Korea as an Army Lieutenant; his Army service continued for many years in active Army Reserves where he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. After returning from Korea, he joined his father in John Montgomery Insurance Agency, where he took exceptional care of his customers. John was a good citizen, who actively served our community for years in the Boys and Girls Club, the Optimist Club, and others. He was a good Scoutmaster of Troop 36 for twelve years where he trained many fine young men. John’s Christian faith was always his guiding light. He has served as deacon, elder, and Sunday School teacher in two churches. He was an active Gideon for years and he and Lynn went on many Lay Witness missions. John married the love of his life, Lynn (Mitchell), on October 4, 1958. Their children are Walt, Jenny (Tim) Grimes, David (Mercedes), and Gary (Amy); his eleven grandchildren; and almost four great-grandchildren will join us in being so thankful for our loving, funny, and wonderful “Papa John”. A celebration of John’s life will be on Sunday, August 26, 2018 at 12:30 pm at West Hills Baptist Church. The family will be happily receiving friends after the service. Condolences may be offered at www.berryfuneralhome.com.
