Joseph E. (Joe) Horner, age 87 moved to his eternal home which he had prepared for him in Heaven on May 17, 2024. He lived a long life enjoying family, all sports and even learning to play golf after his retirement. He and his wife Kay of 69 years enjoyed traveling including Australia for their 50th wedding anniversary. Holidays with all of their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were always special in their home. He spent 37 years working with both The Knoxville Journal and The Knoxville News Sentinel until accepting a new role as Production Director with the Pittsburgh Press and the Pittsburgh Post Gazette for an additional 10 years. His many years of coaching youth teams brought him great pleasure and his years of playing tennis at Holston Hills Country Club kept him in great shape. He was a member of South Knoxville Baptist Church for many years and after returning to Knoxville he moved his membership to First Baptist Concord.
He was preceded in passing by his youngest son, Herbie Horner; parents, W.C. and Ruth Horner; sister, Cynthia Turner and brother, Reed Horner.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Kay; daughter, Katrina (Bucky) Fox; son, Wendell Horner; grandchildren, Renee (Mitch) Lee, Daniel (Jennifer) Horner, Travis Fox, Sam (Kim) Horner, Matt (Lucy) Horner, Katie Horner, Haley Horner; great-grandchildren, Anna Lee, her fiance, Jamie, Katelyn Rimmer, Joseph Horner, Isaac Horner, Wren Horner, Elodie Horner, Jude Horner, Cailor Hundley, Miley Horner.
Family and friends will honor Joe at Berry Funeral Home, 3704 Chapman Highway, Knoxville, TN 37920, on Wednesday, May 22, 2024 with a visitation from 5:00pm to 7:00pm and a funeral service to follow at 7:00pm, a committal service will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery, 4500 Woodlawn Pike, Knoxville, TN 37920 on Thursday, May 23, 2024 at 11:00 am. Pallbearers will be Sam Horner, Daniel Horner, Matt Horner, Bucky Fox, Mitch Lee, and Jamie Halcomb.
