Kathy was a pillar for generations of baton twirlers. She leaves behind an enduring legacy of excellence and mentorship. Kathy’s journey with the Pride of the Southland Band began 1970 to 1976, where she served as Head Majorette. As the long-time Director of Kathy McCarrell's Majorettes and the UT Twirling Camp, she led her students to capture numerous state, regional and national titles.
Her contribution to the sport was so highly regarded that the University established the Kathy McCarrell-Smith Torchbearer Award to annually honor those who mirror her spirit of "giving light unto others".
To the countless students who stepped into her gym, Kathy was far more than an instructor; she was a life mentor. Known for being exceptionally humble and at times endearingly stubborn she had a rare gift for patience.
Every summer, her camp became a sanctuary where young performers learned not just the technical precision of baton twirling, but also the values of poise, character, and grace.
Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard Darrell and Emma Marjorie McCarrell. She is survived by her loving husband, Steve (Smoke), as well as her beloved sister Debra McCarrell and brother Darris McCarrell and wife, Vanessa; Nieces, Casey (Matthew) Santella and Amelia (Joshua) Frazier; Nephew Lucas (Jennifer) McCarrell and an entire legion of grateful twirlers whose lives were forever shaped by her guidance.
Though she will be deeply missed, her cadence lives on in every stadium lights performance and in the hearts of the twirling family she so proudly built.
Prior to the Memorial Service, a private graveside service will be held for family. The family will receive friends 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM Saturday, July 25, 2026, at Mt.Olive Baptist Church, 2500 Maryville Pike, Knoxville TN, 37920 with a Celebration of Life Memorial Service to follow at 4:00 PM.
