Leonce Augustine Ledet, was born on October 5th, 1939. He left this world on December 22, 2019. Affectionately known as, “Brother”, he was a friend to all. Not many know how he got the nickname “Brother”. He received this moniker because he was the only boy of my grandmother Lula Caluda, and my grandfather, Leonce Ledet Sr. He had four sisters, Rose Marie Ledet, Lois Ledet, Mary Ann Roig, and Jocelyn Guillot. Everyone called my father, Brother.
My dad was exceptional. Father to Leon Ledet, Tina Ledet, Sheila Ledet, Aaron Augustine Ledet, and Tara Ann Ledet, grandfather to Haley Ledet, Dallas Love, Maria Ledet, Jamie Mccall, and Audrey Ledet. Kind to all, he lived a full life.
Husband to Lois Ledet, My father was a loving man. Often strict, but always there to give a hug, or a smile, when needed. The name Ledet in French means gambler. My dad loved to play cards, often beating his family in a game of rummy. He enjoyed going to the casino, and winning…..ha!
My dad loved helping people. It was his calling. As a mechanic, he accomplished his purpose. Yes, my father fixed cars, but more than that, he made friends, and was part of a community that considered him family. My father loved his community. My father loved New Orleans, and his customers.
There are many stories about my father. Too many to recount. However, these are a few that still bring a smile to my face. Frustrated at a mustard bottle, he peeked into it to see why it wasn't coming out of the bottle. That ended badly because he squirted mustard all over his face. There was the time he was checking a customer’s oil, and he pulled out the dipstick, and it pierced him in the neck. He said ”That would be the way I go out, death by a dipstick”. We still laugh. My dad loved to watch old episodes of MASH, and he would laugh hysterically at Sanford & Son. Also fond of ice cream, he had a separate freezer full of Barbe’s in his garage. My siblings and I still giggle about how random my dad was. Out of the blue, He stated, “ I like rice”. We indicated we like rice as well. He loved Elvis, and I can still hear him singing moody Blue.
My father will be missed by all whose life he touched. The world is not the same without him. He was a son of New Orleans, friend to many, and there will never be another “Brother Ledet”.
