Louis B. Nickle, Jr., age 89 of Knoxville, passed away peacefully in his sleep on October 12, 2019. He attended Pleasant Ridge Elementary School where they had eight grades in two rooms and was a graduate of Central High School in 1948. He attended the University of Tennessee and played the cornet in both high school and college. Louis and June were married November 4, 1950. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951 where he served 22 months and saw action in the Korean Conflict. Upon his discharge as a Sgt., he returned to work in the family business, The Herbert & Nickle Furniture Co. The furniture store opened in 1925 by Louis, Sr. and his brother-in-law, Henry Herbert. Louis began working in the store at an early age, dusting etc. until as he got older doing age appropriate work. After his father died in 1969 Louis began running the store on his own. Louis and June have been living on the last small parcel of land that originally included 100”s of acres that was deeded to the Nickle family in the 1700’s. Louis’s mother was a charter member of the Virginia Avenue Methodist Church where he and June were also members. The church and furniture store both closed the same year in 1995. They then joined the Trinity United Methodist Church. Louis loved to sing and was always in the church choir. He was in a men’s small group called the Joyful Noise at Trinity. He sang for many years in the O’Conner Singing Seniors choir and in the Shannondale Seniors choir. Preceded in death by parents, L.B. Nickle, Sr. and Lillian L. Hough Nickle; sister, Elizabeth (Libba) N. Tedder, May Nickle Miller (Aunt May); brother-in-law, Joe Tedder and sister-in-law, Loretta Poore Cross. Aunt May lived in the original house on the property and cared for Louis’s grandparents until they died. She provided a home away from home whenever any of the family came to visit. Survived by his wife, June Poore Nickle; sisters, Catharine N. Lyke Sebby, Lillian N. Henderson; brother, William (Bill) Nickle; sons, Dennis Nickle (Blair W.), Douglas Nickle (Elizabeth (Libby) M.); grandsons, Alexander (Alex) W. and wife Nicole, John Louis Nickle and wife Amber, Dustin Nickle (a senior at ETSU); granddaughter, Alison N. Driscoll (Devin); great-grandsons, Maddux Nickle, Wyatt Nickle, Ryder Driscoll and Jude Nickle; great-granddaughters, Evy Grace Nickle and Isla June Nickle; June’s sister, Loretta P. Cross and family, Cindy C. Burroughs, Carol Cross, Cheri Cross, Andrew Burroughs (Sarah), and Lisa Burroughs.
Many nieces, nephews and friends. Visitation will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church on Sunday, November 3rd from 3:00-5:00 pm with a celebration of life to follow. Rev. David Tabor officiating and brother, Rev. Bill Nickle presenting the eulogy with his children and grandchildren speaking as so desired. In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to TUMC food ministry- Manna. His cremains will be interred in a private ceremony later.
