OBITUARY

Lucile Grace Squires

July 26, 1924May 12, 2020

Lucile G. (Sumners) Squires, 95, of Tellico Village and formerly of Jacksonville, Fla., passed on peacefully on Tuesday, May 12, 2020 at The Neighborhood ofTellico Village. Lucile is survived by her children, Craig (Cindy) Sumners of New Oxford, PA. and Barbara (David) Flanagan, Tellico Village. She is also survived by her brother, Dale (Betty) Betz and sister, Beverly Elksnis, and five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Her step-children, Ali (Doug) Tambor and Alma (Murray) Bell, of Cocoa Beach, FL. mourn her loss as well.

Lucile was a native of Vestal, NY where she created many happy memories with her family in a time when life was slower. In her younger days, she was proud to be a Girl Scout Leader. Lucile began her career working for IBM. Later, she and her first husband, Lee Sumners, moved to Heidelberg, Germany where Lee was stationed for part of his service in the Army. While in Germany, they traveled throughout Europe in their free time. Upon their return from Germany, Lucile began working at the National Security Agency in Ft. Meade, MD., where she was a career pioneer among women her age serving as a systems analyst. She was a patriotic believer in our country’s leaders whom she served.

Upon Lee’s death after 31 years of marriage, Lucile carried on as the independent woman she was and traveled in her motor home, even across country with her brother, Dale, and sister-in-law, Betty. Eventually, Lucile joined a group of motor-homers who traveled together for fun and companionship. It was in this group, Singles-on-Wheels, that Lucile met her second husband of 31 years, Al Squires. They traveled extensively across the United States in their motorhome for many years. Lucile and Al split their time between Jacksonville, FL and Tellico Village before they moved to Tellico Village fulltime in 2015. Al passed on in December 2019.

Lucile had a remarkable career and a long and happy retirement. She embraced technology and could always be found using her iPad and iPhone to FaceTime and text loved ones. She was always “dressed to the nines”. Lucile had a sharp mind until the very end. Most importantly, she was loved by many for her strength, character, wit, and generosity. Finally, Lucile was a loving, devoted, and supportive mother. All will miss her; however, we celebrate her life and are eternally grateful for her time with us.

The family wants to extend a huge thank you for the warm and loving staff at The Neighborhood. Berry Highland West is handling final arrangements. A celebration of life will be held in the future. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to a charity of your choice.

Lucile was such a wonderful and interesting person. She led an incredible life and raised two wonderful children. Listening to her share her life experiences was a real treat. We will miss her terribly. May God wrap his loving arms around her and welcome her to His kingdom. And, may memories comfort Barbara, David, Craig, Cindy, and their children.
