Mamie Henegar Vohs, age 83, of Knoxville, passed away on April 15, 2019. She was born on June 3, 1935 to the late Martin Joseph Henegar and Gary Dodd Henegar in Knoxville, TN. She grew up in Bearden and had fond memories of attending Bearden school grades 1-12. She also attended the University of Tennessee and belonged to Chi Omega sorority. In 1955 she moved to Washington D.C. and took a position with the Federal government. Her position with the U.S. Department of Defense brought her much pleasure and resulted in numerous travels overseas and in the United States. During this time she met Major Lester John Vohs, an officer with the United States Air Force, whom she married in Basel, Switzerland in 1963. Toward the end of her 32 years of service with the government, she and Lester lived in Miami, Florida. They returned to Knoxville in 1990 to live closer to Mamie’s mother. Mamie was preceded in death by her parents and her beloved husband of 44 years. Mamie is survived by her first cousins James Dodd (Jimmy) Lawrence (Gail Caldwell), of Clinton; Peggy McMillan White (William A., Jr.), of Chattanooga; the Reverend Ed Henegar (Judy Rorex), of Monroe, North Carolina; Henry A. Henegar (Jane Humphrey), of Lookout Mountain, Georgia; Jane Henegar Loudermilk (Larry), of Summerville, South Carolina; and Margaret Henegar Broudy, of Connecticut. Among other dear relatives and friends, she leaves James Dodd Lawrence, Jr., of Harriman, TN; Joseph (Seph) Caldwell Lawrence, of Clinton, TN; Emily Henegar Estes (Reverend Erik), of Columbia, S.C.; Reverend Walter Henegar (Anne), of Atlanta, Georgia; Alexander Henegar (Goranka), of Washington, D.C.; Edward Guille Henegar (Ann), of Charlotte, N.C.; Dr. Martin McMillan Henegar (Dr. Amina), of Charlotte, N.C.; Rebecca Henegar Gould (Warren) of Durham, N.C.; William Adolphus White, III, of Hendersonville, TN; Edward McMillan White (Kara), of Burke, VA; Cowan (Roddy) Rodgers, III, (Julie Sennet), of Knoxville; Cowan Rodgers, IV, of Knoxville; Katherine Rodgers Mayfield, of Knoxville; Brittany Mayfield, of Franklin, TN; Blair Mayfield Rissing (Dr. Michael), of Franklin, TN; Katie Mayfield Frye (Gilbert), of Knoxville; Barbara Foster Burrows (Stanley, III), of Signal Mountain, TN; Anne Foster Curtis, of Chattanooga, TN; John Foster (Margo Walters), of Atlanta, Georgia; Tena Rodgers Boehm, of Vero Beach, Florida; Lea Rodgers Valentine, of Jamestown, TN; and Earnest Briscoe Rodgers (Anne), of Boston, Massachusetts. Mamie was a consummate hostess and generous friend who was keenly interested in everyone she met, often remembering details of the lives of her friends, family and acquaintances that astonished those who knew her. Her practice was to always bring out the best in others – she made everyone around her feel valued. She had a wonderful, often self-deprecating, sense of humor and invited others to share in her sometimes playfully wry take on the world with a warm chuckle and occasional wink. Although she and Lester accomplished much during their lives, they never boasted of their accomplishments, instead choosing to bring to light the accomplishments and gifts of those around them. Mamie loved attending Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church and served on many Committees there: the Associate Pastor Nominating Committee (2004); the Women’s Ministries; the Deacon Class (2013-2014); the Presbyterian Women and Coordinating Council; the Prayer Chain; the Older Adults/Sequoyah Seniors Committee; the Tower (monthly) Newsletter, and she served as Chair of the Extended (Homebound) Communion Team. She also dedicated herself to the letter writing ministry through the Presbyterian Women to homebound members of the church, remembering and acknowledging special occasions (birthdays and holidays). Close friends and family are invited to attend the Interment ceremony near the Henegar family plot (Gospels section) at Highland Memorial Cemetery in Bearden at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 7, 2019. A Memorial Service on the same day will be held at Sequoyah Hills Presbyterian Church at 1:00 PM, on Tuesday May 7, 2019, the Reverend Mark D. Lampley and the Reverend Rachel Hamburger officiating. In lieu of flowers, Mamie requested that any memorial contributions be made to the charity of your choice. Condolences may be offered at www.BerryHighlandWest.com
