Mary Winifred Rick Newton of Knoxville passed away on Saturday, September 10, 2016 at Shannondale of Maryville. She previously resided at 3601 Circle Lake Lane in Knoxville. She was born in St. Louis Missouri, on February 15, 1925, and moved from Tulsa, Oklahoma to Oak Ridge, Tennessee during World War II and the Manhattan Project where she met her future husband Kenneth R. Newton (U.S. Army). After raising six children, Mary pursued her college degree, earning a Bachelor's degree in Art History and Asian Study in 1977 and a Master's degree in Asian History in 1985 at the age of 60 from the University of Tennessee. She traveled the world, including trips to Scotland, Ireland, the United Kingdom, and two trips to China to practice her Chinese language skills. Mary was an avid supporter and fan of the U.T. Lady Vols and held season tickets since 1987. She was a member of the U.T. Faculty Women's Club, the Lakemoor Hills Garden Club, and a long-time volunteer for the Ladies of Charity. She is preceded in death by her parents, her sister Celeste Hahn (husband Howard) of Clayton Oklahoma, her son Earl Rick Newton (U.S. Navy) of Knoxville, and husband Kenneth R. Newton, PhD, of Knoxville. She is survived by her sister Muriel Turinsky of Dallas Texas, brothers George "Sonny" Rick of Pine Lakes, Texas and Cliff "Butch" Rick (wife Jackie) of Port Ludlow, Washington, daughter Patricia Newton, J.D. (husband David Lillard, J.D.) of Nashville, son Ross Newton of Ripley, Ohio, daughter Michele Neal (husband Randy) of Alcoa, son Kevin Newton (wife Glenda) of Maryville, and Maureen Newton, PhD, of Knoxville and Jacksonville, Alabama, grandchildren Rachel Newton of Nashville, Kelly Douglass (husband Chris) of Knoxville, Jason Newton of Maryville, Jennifer Greer (husband Jason) of Maryville, William Newton of Cincinnati, Ohio, Alex Newton (USCG) of Alexandria, Virginia, and Julia Newton of Maysville, Kentucky, great-grandchildren Austin Newton of Maryville, Tennessee, Benjamin Bidwell of New Brunswick, New Jersey, Zachary Douglass and Nate Douglass of Knoxville, and Alyssa Newton of Morristown, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews around the country, and special friend Jeanette Demott of Knoxville. Mary was a beloved sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who raised a wonderful family. Her love and kindness will be missed by her family and friends. A Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at St. John XXIII University Parish, 1710 Melrose Place at 7:00 PM. Family will receive friends following the service.
