Melvin C. Thompson

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mel Thompson, a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, dedicated coach, and respected member of the Karns Community on July 15th, 2026.

Throughout his life, Mel was known for his unwavering work ethic, spending many years working as a contractor. He believed in doing every job with pride and integrity, rarely slowing down and always finding purpose in hard work.

His greatest passion, however, was sports. Whether coaching Little League baseball, Youth football, or spending his spare time umpiring and officiating with TSSAA, he dedicated countless hours to mentoring young athletes. To many, he was more than a coach whose influence reached far beyond the playing field. He found immense joy in helping children grow, both as athletes and as individuals.

If there was a game on, you could count on him to be watching it. He loved talking sports with friends, family, and anyone willing to join the conversation. Sports were not just a hobby-they were a lifelong passion that connected him with so many people.

Above all else, Mel cherished his family. His sons were the pride and joy of his life, and the love he had for them was constant and unconditional. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Becky; his treasured sons, Corey, Justin "JT", and Travis "Biscuit"; his cherished grandchildren Cherish, Mia, Isla, Lily, Sydney, and Trevin who brought him endless happiness; and his faithful feline companions, Bo and Trouble.

A true pillar of the Karns community, Mel earned the respect and admiration of countless friends, neighbors, athletes, and families through his generosity, kindness and willingness to give of himself. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the lessons he taught, and the love he shared.

Though our hearts are heavy with grief, we find comfort in the memories he gave us and the lasting impact he made on everyone fortunate enough to know him. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever carried in our hearts. Not only did we lose a father, friend, and coach, but an all American hero.
