Mildred Celeste Hickman

June 25, 1927March 17, 2021

Mildred Celeste Hickman, age 93, passed away surrounded by loving friends and family on March 17, 2021 at her home in Murfreesboro, TN. A longtime resident of Strawberry Plains, TN, Mildred was known for her devout Christian faith, her 50 years working as a nurse, and her love of gardening and tending to her many flower gardens. Mildred graduated from Knoxville High School in the 40’s and was so very proud to be the first woman in her family to do so. She was a dedicated member and elder of Paw Paw Hollow Baptist Church in Kodak, TN, where she taught Sunday school for decades and produced the yearly Christmas programs that drew crowds from all around the area. She also served many years with the Women’s Missionary Union.

Mildred loved fiercely and her generosity knew no bounds. She lived as an example— a devout and faithful servant of God. She had a deep sense of gratitude for those who loved her, as she spent her final days telling us “you are beautiful” and “thank you.” We honor her for all her hands have done and praise her earthly works as inspiration. May her bright light continue to shine through our hearts and may her wisdom linger with us forever.

Mildred is survived by her sister, Patricia Ann Roth of Jacksonville, Florida; grandchildren, Karman Gossett of Murfreesboro, TN and Rance Gossett of Knoxville TN; great grandson, Ravin Gossett; special cousin, Becky Doyle of Knoxville, TN; her Florida family, Patrick and Deanie Daniel, Lisa Cummings, and John Tracy Daniel; and special Murfreesboro friends, Carol Davenport, The Scott Family, and The Black Family.

Mildred was preceded in death by her parents, John Lethco and Sarah Mason Lethco; husband Roy Lee Hickman; and her beloved daughter, Margo Hickman Gossett.

Prayers and thoughts to the family. I have fond memories of Mildred as my Sunday school teacher and as my nurse at Dr. Laman’s office. She was a blessing to me ❤️

I am so very thankful for Mildred's life. My childhood is filled with sweet memories of her from play practices, spending time at her home, her love of frogs, and being my Sunday School teacher for years. She impressed a love of missions on my life. I loved going to WMU meetings and spending time with her and Mary Jane. I am praying for your family. Mildred was such a jewel to me.

We enjoyed having Mildred in our city for her last years. She was so well cared for by her loving granddaughter, Dr. Karman Gossett, a successful acupuncturist and entrepreneur in Middle Tennessee.

Ms. Mildred was probably the most influential Sunday school teacher I had growing up. Under her guidance I learned the books of the Bible, the Ten Commandments and so much more. In my mind's eye I can still picture us in the small classroom downstairs at Paw Paw Hollow and her standing in the front near the door teaching us. That was well over 50 years ago and then she went on to teach our daughter, too. And those Christmas play rehearsals and then the night of the play when the church would be packed. She was a very special lady and probably will never realize all the lives she touched. Prayers for peace and comfort for her family.
