June 2, 1926 – October 28, 2026
Nettie Mae Scalf, lovingly known as Mamaw, passed away at home on October 28, 2026, at the age of 100.
She lived a remarkable 100 years, leaving behind a lifetime of memories, laughter, and love that will carry on through the generations of family who knew and loved her.
Mamaw loved her family unconditionally, but anyone who knew her knew she had a mind of her own. She wasn't one to keep her thoughts and opinions to herself, and she certainly wasn't one to back down from them. Extremely stubborn and convinced her way was usually the right way, Mamaw had a personality that was unmistakably hers. You might not always agree with her, but you could always count on her to let you know exactly where she stood. That strong will and unmistakable spirit were part of what made her so memorable.
One of her favorite little traditions was trying to beat others to saying "Hi, bye!" whenever they saw one another. It became a playful competition and a special part of the families relationship, one of those little things that may have seemed silly to anyone else but will forever bring a smile to the memories they shared.
Mamaw also had a soft spot for animals. While living in Blaine, Tennessee, she took it upon herself to feed the stray cats that found their way to her home. Cats were her favorite, but she never turned away a stray and would always do her best to care for them. Her generosity toward those furry visitors was so well known that, at times, there were at least 20 cats hanging around. Apparently, if a stray cat found its way to Mamaw's house, it knew it had found a place to eat!
In her quieter moments, Mamaw enjoyed working word search puzzles and watching old television shows. She appreciated the simple things in life and had her own way of doing things, just as she had her own way of seeing the world.
Nettie is survived by her son, Kenneth Scalf, and daughter-in-law, Charlotte Scalf; her granddaughters, Kathy Phillips and Kristina Greer; and her grandsons-in-law, Richard Phillips and Ryan Greer. She also leaves behind her great-grandchildren, Ambrey Phillips, Conner Phillips, Jackson Greer, Jennifer Thompson and her husband, Matthew, and Jessica Greer; and her great-great-grandchildren, Edwin Thompson and Stephen Thompson.
At 100 years old, Mamaw leaves behind a family spanning generations, each with their own memories and stories to tell. She will be remembered for her unconditional love, her strong opinions, her stubborn spirit, her love for animals, and the laughter shared in countless conversations and everyday moments.
Though her time here has come to an end, the memories she created and the love she gave will continue to live on in the hearts of her family. There will always be stories to tell, moments to remember, and reasons to smile when thinking of Mamaw.
