Oliver Sylvester “Syl” Baldridge It is with utmost sorrow that we announce the passing of the best dad, father in law, and grandfather. On the morning of July 30, 2022, Syl Baldridge, age 103, went to meet his Savior and Lord. Born November 9, 1918, in Jackson, TN to Charles William and Ibbie Jane Baldridge. At an early age, the family moved to Inverness, Mississippi where he graduated high school. After high school, Syl graduated from Sunflower Junior College in Mississippi. In 1941, after a short tenure as a bookkeeper, he entered the US Army Air Corp where he was a Staff Sergeant and served his country in World War II. After WWII, he came to Knoxville to complete his Accounting degree from the University of Tennessee. After graduating in 1947, he began his 39-year career in the Treasurer’s office at the University of Tennessee. He retired as the Bursar in 1986. During his tenure at UT, he helped many local and foreign students complete their degrees and received many thankful gifts that his family still has today. In 1950, he married the love of his life, Betty Lynn Coulter. Together with their many friends, they enjoyed playing cards, shopping, picnics in the mountains and family reunions. His hobbies included fishing, golfing, and was an avid VFL for all UT sports. He was a long-time member of Island Home Baptist Church where he served as a Life Deacon. Preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Ibbie Jane Baldridge; his beloved wife of 60 years, Betty; brother, Byron; sister, Russeline Rosser of Memphis, TN; and sister, Annabel Fatkin of Castro Valley, CA. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Kreis and Roberta Baldridge; daughter, Betsy Baldridge Taylor; granddaughter and husband, Kreistyn and Luke Whetsel. He would be welcoming his first great grandchild, Wesson, in October. Family will receive friends Friday, August 5, 2022, at Berry Funeral Home, 3704 Chapman Hwy, Knoxville from 5:00 until 7:00 pm. The service will follow in the chapel with Pastor Tim Fleeger officiating. On Saturday, August 6, 2022 family and friends will gather at Island Home Baptist Church Cemetery for a 10:00 am graveside service with full military honors.
