Raymond Joel Mowery, age 86, of Knoxville, Tennessee went home to the Lord on Saturday, August 26, 2023. Ray is now able to look fully upon Jesus and see his beloved parents again. He did not view being blind as a handicap, but a nuisance and never once let it slow him down. Ray always saw the good in everyone and remained eternally optimistic. He never wavered in his faith, but always reminded us that it was God's will for everything and to always trust in Him and through his Son all things are possible.
Ray served for many years on the Committee of Blind Vendors as part of Tennessee Business Enterprises helping to make it the nationally recognized program it is today. He had a servants heart and, as instructed, never doing for any awards but because it needed to be done. Ray was a member of First Baptist Church of Concord, he was baptized at Fort Hill Baptist Church. His greatest joy outside of his family, was being at UT for the last 34 years and the impact he could have on the younger generation of incoming freshmen. He wishes for joy at this time, for as 1John 3:2 says, "We shall see him as he is and he is in the presence of the Lord having been made whole again."
Ray is preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Minnie Kirby Mowery and sister, Willie Mae Fair. He leaves behind, to cherish his memory, his wife, Rhinda; children, Ray and Rennie Mowery; sister, Marye Evelyn Clark (Barrett); brothers, Gilbert Mowery (Amalie) and Carroll E. "Gene" Mowery (Ruth); namesake niece, Brenda Ray Witt, many nieces, nephews and grand nieces and nephews.
