COKER, ROY WALKER – age 89 of Knoxville passed away December 18, 2014. He was a Navy veteran of WWII and Korea. He survived the largest Naval casualty of the Korean war. While employed at Y-12 he was on the team that constructed the Apollo Lunar Sample Return Containers (Moon boxes) for NASA. Roy was instrumental in starting the Karns Jr. High School basketball team in the early sixties. He loved his family, friends, music , sports and was a hard worker. Preceded in death by his parents, Harvey and Mary Louise Coker; sister, Katherine Prince; brothers, Dr. Harvey G. Coker, Jr. and Dr. Sam Coker. Survived by his wife of 65 years, Shirley Coker; son, Ed and wife Chris Coker; daughters, Vickie Coker, Mary Hampton and husband Dean; grandchildren, Anneke Moody and husband Aaron, Asher Coker, Sarah Hampton, Rebekah Hampton and one great-grandchild, Isaac Moody; special friends, Steve Vineyard and Donna McLaughlin. Special thanks to the amazing caregivers, staff and many friends at Ben Atchley State Veterans Home. Words cannot begin to express our love and appreciation for you all. Visitation will be from 3-5 pm Sunday at Weaver Funeral Home with service to follow at 5 pm. Family and friends will meet 11:15 am Tuesday at East Tennessee Veterans Cemetery on John Sevier Highway for an 11:30 am interment.
