

Sherman was the eldest of three children to the late Byron and Ruth Green. He graduated from Farragut High School in 1953 and was subsequently drafted into the Army, serving in Germany until his honorable discharge in December of 1963. Sherman dedicated over 35 years of his career to working as a civil engineer for the University of Tennessee. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, he married Carolyn Norman in 1960, and together they built a life centered on family, faith, and service. Following the unexpected passing of his first wife, Sherman married Wilma Williford in 1988. He was a longtime member of Beech Grove Baptist Church in Knoxville and was known for his love of cattle farming and gardening, as well as his willingness to lend a helping hand. Sherman touched countless lives.
Sherman is survived by his son, Gerald (Sherri) Green, and stepdaughter, Lana Lane; three cherished grandchildren, Andrew, Amanda, and Zavin; and great-grandchildren, Willow, Zane, Ryanne, Wylie, and Barrett. He was preceded in death by his parents, wives, and brothers.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 26, 2026, at 5 pm, with a funeral service to follow at 7 pm at Berry Highland Memorial Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held at Berry Highland Memorial Cemetery on Friday, February 27, 2026, at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in Sherman's memory.
Sherman will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to his family, his service to others, and the quiet strength that defined his life. His legacy of kindness and integrity will live on in all who knew and loved him.
