Sybil Martin Knight of Knoxville, Tennessee, a loving and devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, found peace in the arms of her Heavenly Father on July 15, 2026, at the age of 92. Born on July 8, 1934, in Ferguson, Kentucky, she is survived by her son, Gil Knight, and daughter-in-law, Maggie; her son, Greg Knight, and daughter-in-law, Cindee; and her grandson, Billy Knight. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 61 years, William E. Knight. Throughout Bill's 20 years of service as a naval officer, he was often away from home. In his absence, Sybil devoted herself to caring for their family, raising their two young sons and managing the many responsibilities of daily life with strength and dedication.
Sybil was a devoted member of Woodlawn Christian Church since 1973. For many years, she led efforts to minister to the sick, bereaved, and homebound, for which she received the Charles and Marie Hathaway Award in recognition of her faithful service. Only the Lord knows the number of visits, cards, letters, phone calls, and meals she shared with those who needed encouragement and the reassurance that someone cared. Not only did Sybil serve in this way herself, but she inspired and enlisted many others to join her in this ministry of compassion.
Sybil also devoted countless hours to assisting elderly members of Woodlawn Christian Church and residents of Asbury Senior Living by providing transportation to appointments, errands, and other important activities. In addition to her church ministry, Sybil served for a time as a Pink Lady volunteer at UT Medical Center, bringing comfort and kindness to patients during difficult times.
While living at Asbury Senior Living, Sybil continued her lifelong commitment to serving others as an active member of the Asbury Volunteer Action Team and the Asbury Garden Club. She also participated in Stephen Ministry, helping others navigate the challenges of grief and loss with understanding and compassion.
The family will receive friends at Woodlawn Christian Church in Knoxville on Monday, July 27th from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with the funeral service immediately following. Burial will take place the next morning at 10:00 a.m. at the East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery on John Sevier Highway.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Woodlawn Christian Church, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, or the Alzheimer's Association.
