Terry Gene Henry, known affectionately as "Bit," passed away on September 9, 2024, at the age of 78 in Knoxville, TN. Knoxville was his lifelong home and the city of his birth on April 26, 1946. His life was marked by a profound dedication to service, both in his professional and personal life, which was characterized by his loyalty, selflessness, and a keen sense of humor.
After attending Tyson Junior High and West High School, Terry proudly served his country in the Navy from 1964 to 1968. He then served in the Army from 1976 until 2006, embracing a distinguished military career that spanned over three decades. Following his Naval service, Terry graduated from East Tennessee State University and later the Northwestern Traffic Institute in Chicago, IL. Upon joining the Tennessee Army National Guard, he rapidly progressed through the ranks, achieving the rank of First Sergeant, a position he proudly held for over 6 years. In addition to his military service, he further served his community with the Knoxville Police Department from 1971 until his retirement in 2004. His service to our nation, state, and the city of Knoxville is both inspiring and symbolic of his dedication to selfless service.
Outside of his professional life, Terry was an avid golfer, a hobby that brought him much joy and relaxation. He enjoyed keeping up with countless friends, colleagues, and family, and he rarely found himself in a business or restaurant where he didn’t know someone. Terry was a devoted member of numerous community organizations over the years, and he was truly a man of action and of the people.
He leaves behind a loving family: his daughter and son-in-law, Amber and John Roberts; daughter-in-law and son, Tracy and Justin Henry; grandchildren, Olivia, Abby, Benjamin, Lathan, Canon, Hagen, Zaxton, and Brighton; sister, Norma Adkins; sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Raymond Rimmer; sister-in-law, Betty Jo Henry; niece and nephew, Lori and Jim Adkins. Terry was preceded in death by his parents, Emma and Boyd Henry, and his siblings, Georgeanne Chessher, Jimmy Henry, and Jerry Henry.
The family would like to express gratitude for the care and compassion Terry received from the staff at the Ben Atchley State Veterans Home - Special thanks to nurses, Christina, Debbie W., Joanne, Yolanda, Andrea, Carolyn, Mark, and Michelle.
A visitation for Terry will be held Friday, September 13, 2024 11am at Berry Highland Memorial Funeral Home followed by a graveside service at 1pm at Berry Highland Memorial Cemetery with Military Honors.
