

Thomas D. Ungs, Ph.D. died on September 24, 2026, at age 97, surrounded by his family. One of ten children, he was born October 3, 1928, and was a native of Dyersville, Iowa. He earned his undergraduate and master’s degrees, and doctorate in political science at the University of Iowa, where he met his beloved wife, Theresa, and started their family.
Tom deeply loved and took great pride in his family. He was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa Lamm Ungs. He is survived by his five children, Susan Ungs Rogers of Jacksonville, NC, Elizabeth Ungs Phillips of Knoxville, Andrea Ungs Costantino of Knoxville, Lisa Ungs Revenig of Chattanooga, and Matthew T. Ungs of Franklin, TN. His nine grandchildren brought him immense joy: Benjamin Rogers, Patrick Rogers, Connor Rogers, Erin Phillips, Laura Phillips White, Alice Revenig Clark, Louis Revenig, Julia Revenig Keck, and Iva Costantino Hill. He leaves behind seven great grandchildren. Sons in law Patrick Phillips, Victor Costantino, and Michael Revenig held a special place in his heart. He is also survived by his dear sister Caryl Willenborg of Dyersville.
Tom enjoyed a life-long career in higher education, holding teaching and administrative positions at the University of North Dakota, Wichita State University, and Kent State University prior to his appointment in 1971 as Professor and Head of the Department of Political Science, and Director of the Bureau of Public Administration at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He was an active member of several professional organizations and served as President of the Tennessee Political Science Association. Tom contributed to the scholarly literature in his discipline, concentrating his interests in the fields of American political thought, religion and politics. Above all, his interactions directly with students, both in the classroom and through personal guidance and instruction, gave Tom his greatest professional satisfaction and rewards. He closely followed the careers and took pride in the accomplishments of many former students.
Those who knew Tom appreciated his sharp mind, quick wit, and strong moral compass. He was a devout Roman Catholic, was a congregant of St. John XXIII University Parish for 50 years, and later attended Immaculate Conception Church.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10am on Monday, October 12, 2026 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with a brief reception following. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to ChildFund International, Richmond, VA or to InterFaith Health Center, Knoxville.
