Vernon Ernest Hill 75, was born in Louisville, TN on January 29, 1944 and died at his home in Seymour, TN on September 2, 2019. He is preceded in death by his parents Quenton Kenneth Hill and Myrtle Inez Hubbs Hill; his brothers Marvin Dennis Hill, Jess Randall Hill, and Dale Quincy Hill; and his son Adam Michael Hill. After two years at Tennessee Technological University where he attended on a football scholarship, he took a job with Norfolk Southern Railway as a carman at the Coster Shop. He worked for the railroad for over 30 years. Besides spending time with his much-loved family, he enjoyed any type of outdoor activity and spent many hours hunting, fishing and camping. Vernon was a student of nature, loved learning, and had extensive knowledge of the plants and animals local to his home. Vernon loved his family deeply. His wife Myra was the love of his life. He was proud of his daughters. His grandsons were his true glory, and he often bragged on them with a twinkle in his eyes, declaring them to be “mighty fine”. He was a much-loved husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. Visitation will be held at Berry Highland South Funeral Home from 1pm – 2pm on Friday, September 6. A graveside service and interment will follow at 2:30pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in honor of Vernon’s life-long love of bears to Appalachian Bear Rescue 121 Painted Trillium Way Townsend, TN 37882. May the Lord bless your family, and help heal any sadness, and replace it with joy. Myra and Lissie and the rest of the family, Vernon was a mountain of a man with a kind heart. I never seen him without a smile and a warm hand shake. He will be missed at our family gatherings, but remember he will still be there just in a different seat. Vernon will be sitting by the father, looking down with that same warm smile. For me and my family we were blessed to have known him..
God bless, and we love you all Greg,April, and Caleb Miller

Prayers for Myra and the family. I grew up with Vernon and he worked with my Uncle Hubert Hackworth. Vernon was a tough football player and a great guy who grew up in the best place in the world, Alcoa, Tennessee. He will be missed.

I heard about big V. when I first started on the railroad back in the eighties but never got to meet him until I started at John Sevier yard in 1997. Instantly he was one of the few folk that you meet whom that you wished you had met years earlier. He instilled in me the love of ginseng hunting and the study of all the plants and it was always an exciting time when we would hook up to enjoy the woods. I went to see him just a couple weeks ago at the rehab center and as always we just started talking about the mountains as if we had not been apart for awhile, he immediately started trying to tell me about a bear den in one of his favorite hollers ( Goat creek), and saying that he needed some " sang "! Just this weekend I was thinking of him and wondering if he got home because he seemed to be doing well but as I checked Ms. Myra's message yesterday and found out that he had passed, I felt an empty spot open in my heart! Praying for all the family and knowing by his admission to me of knowing the Lord that one day soon I will get to walk with him again.
