Walter Melton Sands, Jr. Obituary

Walter Melton Sands, Jr. (67) of Knoxville, known to family and friends as Buster, went to Heaven on Tuesday, January 15th after a brave battle against cancer. Walt served as Building Superintendent at Church Street United Methodist until he retired in 2016. Walt was known as a Mr. Fix-It wherever he went, and regardless of the problem, he knew just what to do to make things work. Walt is the son of Walter Sands, Sr. and Jean Oglesby of Knoxville, who preceded him in death. Survivors include wife Judy (Bowers), son Tim Sands and daughter-in-law Tracy (Davis); Grandchildren Philip, Kristen, and Brett, along with many close brothers and sisters-in-law. Services will take place at Berry Highland South/Holly Hills on Monday, January 21 -- Visitation 12:00-2:00; Memorial Service 2:00. Walt, a true friend to every person he met, will be missed by many, but we know God has a “to do” list waiting for him in Heaven, and we’ll see him there.

I am so sorry that I can not be with you for the memorial service. I worked a lot with Walt in his early years at Church Street UMC. He could fix anything and was a hard and dedicated worker. I all ways enjoyed my time with Walt. He is missed very much

Walt was the best. From the mischievous smile to his amazing knowledge, he could solve any problem. The phrase ‘heart of gold ‘ could have been coined for Walt. He was so proud of his family and was quick to share (and brag in a tiny understated way) whenever talking about them. But Walt was not much of a talker, he was an incredible doer.
