

Eugene Francis Marner, 92, passed away on Thursday afternoon, December 29 at Community Howard Hospital. Gene was born to Joseph and Carrie Marner on May 31, 1924 in Howard Township, Indiana. He graduated Howard High School in 1942, and then attended Syracuse College, University of Illinois, and Indiana University of Kokomo. Gene married Audrey Bireley on June 28, 1947, and she precedes him in death.
Gene worked at Delco as a tinsmith for over 50 years, and also served our country in the United States Army. He was a part of the 104th Infantry, Timberwolf Division, and was awarded citations for the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign, the American Theater, Victory and Good Conduct Medals, as well as receiving two Bronze Stars. He was a member of the Greentown Lodge, the Scottish Rite in Indianapolis, and he was also a Shriner. He made over 170 trips to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital in Chicago, transporting children for medical treatment. Gene was also a past member of the Supervisory Committee for Solidarity Community Federal Credit Union. He was a longtime member of the Indiana Nut Growers Association.
Gene is survived by his daughters, Susan (Ray) Jones and Rebecca Marner; brothers Kenneth (Barbara, deceased) Marner, Wilbur (Donna) Marner, Wayne (Beverly) Marner, and sister Beulah (Clarence) Cobb, 3 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.
Gene is preceded in death by two daughters, Carol and Jane Marner, one son, Kim Marner, and a brother, Larry (Lorine survives) Marner.
Family and friends may call from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 3 at Ellers Webster Street Chapel, with a service to follow. Pastor David Osborne will be officiating. Gene will be laid to rest at Sunset Memory Garden, with military honors. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Shriner Children’s Hospital.
