James A. Carter, 83, Carmel, passed away on Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at Riverview Hospital. He was born June 17, 1930, in Kokomo, to Albert Glenn and Mildred (Todd) Carter. On December 7, 1950, he married Virginia (Herr) Carter, and she survives.

James served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He earned a B.S. degree from Indiana University and an M.S. degree from Butler University. He graduated from the Indiana State Police Academy and was a member of the Rotary Club in Noblesville, the Westfield School Board, the National School Board, the Easter Seals, and Southside Christian Church. He cherished his family and felt that he was one of the luckiest men alive to have been able to spend 63 years with his loving wife.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Jeff and his wife Terri Carter, Cicero; one daughter, Marsha and her husband Michael Kehrer, Ringgold, Georgia; seven grandchildren, Monica and her husband Peter Fastenau, Melanie Kehrer, Morgan Kehrer, Brian and his wife Angela Carter, Michelle and her husband Dan Pescovitz, Abby Russell, and Sara Hiatt; and one great-grandson, Prestin Hiatt.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
