

Mary Gertrude (Schleeter) Ashburn, 98, of Surprise, AZ, formerly of Kokomo, IN, passed away on March 28, 2022, at Rio Vista Acute Care. She was born on May 13, 1923 to the late Herman and Gertrude (Sevenish) Schleeter of Kokomo. She graduated from Kokomo High School in 1941 and married John Scott Ashburn on May 11,1946 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church who preceded her in death on April 24, 2011.
Mary enjoyed taking care of her family, spending time with friends, reading, painting china and beating John in golf. John and Mary enjoyed attending their children and grandchildren's many sporting events, from grade school through college. The Monday after the Pearl Harbor attack in 1941, Mary, along with her friend Mary Jo Baron, worked, without pay, at a local army recruiting station to assist the overwhelmed office in enlisting soldiers. Mary was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Kokomo, the Altar Rosary Society and a group leader for both the Girl and Boy Scouts of America.
Survivors include her two sons Richard (Dick) Ashburn and wife Linda of Surprise, AZ and Theodore (Ted) Ashburn and wife Jennifer of Boston MA, seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, a sister Delores (Babe) Damitz of Texas and several nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Paul, Lawrence and Bill Schleeter, and her beloved daughter, Mary Monica (Ashburn) Tenbrook and her son-in-law Daniel Tenbrook.
May Mary's soul and the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace. There will be a memorial Mass celebrated at 12:00 p.m. Saturday June 18th at St Patrick's Catholic Church, 1229 N Washington Street. Father Stephen Duquaine will be celebrating. Visiting will be one hour prior to the funeral mass at the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Breast Cancer Society.
