Years ago I got to meet Phoebe in person at a continuing education event.  I had heard her (and her parents’) name mentioned many times growing up.  My grandmother was Phoebe Ellen Goodnight. She and my grandad Bob always had such nice things to say about Phoebe and her parents.  It was so fun when we actually met and I introduced myself.  Sad to hear she has left us. 

Dear Lee,
I apologize for this being so late, and I do hope you  receive it. I am so glad that my brother, Tedd, and I stopped to see Phoebe when I was last in Kokomo.  Her condition was very apparent to me at that time, so I wasn't all that surprised to learn of her passing. She was not the same extraordinarily sharp Phoebe from the class of '61. I send my sincere condolences to you and to all of her family.

In memory of Phoebe Carter,

Sending our deepest sympathy for the loss of Phoebe.  She was
a blessing to all who knew her.  She was a lovely lady in so many ways.

I became acquainted with her as she did my Mother-in-Law's (Thelma Wooldridge) taxes for several years.  My close childhood friend, Becky Fry,  worked with her on taxes.

Aunt Phoebe had enough of her brother!  Tired of his “salty comments!”

Memories! Phoebe will be greatly missed! I first met her in the fall of 1961 when I arrived at my assigned dorm room at Indiana University. Over the course of that one year, we formed a lifelong friendship. Over the next 60+ years, she proved to be one of the most loving, caring people I ever met and the best friend I could ever have. 

Among other things, she and Lee showed up at the hospital in Evansville where I was being prepped for open heart surgery. I was told they stayed until they knew I was out of surgery and doing okay.  When I finally got to come home, she came and stayed a week and took care of me. Several years later, when my son died unexpectedly and I had gotten many of his things stored in my house, she offered to come and help me. She stayed two weeks helping me to decide what to keep and what not to keep. etc. These are just two of many times when she was of immense help to me.

I will miss her radiant smile. I will  miss her calling me "Kiddo" even though I am older than she. I will miss being able to talk like we used to do. 

I know that Lee and the families are missing her presence very keenly. You all have my sympathy and condolences. May God hold you,  keep you and give you strength.

Aunt Phoebe and Uncle Lee made it to a lot of special events in our lives. She was like a second mom to me. I was so lucky to have the mom I had and then even luckier to have Aunt Phoebe in my life too. She and Uncle Lee came to my nursing graduation from Purdue, our kids weddings, etc. Aunt Phoebe and Uncle Lee let me stay with them for an entire summer before my last year of college. I remember getting a speeding ticket one day and being afraid to go home and tell her. She was so sweet and very understanding. Any big event or major happening in my life - I wanted to call Aunt Phoebe and share the news with her. I will miss her so much . Our loss is heavens gain!

I have a special memory of connecting with Phoebe through the arts.  We  both were taking piano lessons in our forties when she sent me a jazzy rendition of Silent Night that I love.  Phoebe also gifted us with one of her lovely oil paintings. It hangs in our living room. 
John remembers his encounters with Phoebe when she flew out to California to assist Freda with her finances.  She was generous with her time and always willing to go the extra mile. 
Rest in peace, dear Phoebe.  You will be missed.  Marianne and John

Remembering this couple and the times we got to spend together. Phoebe's passing is a great loss to all who knew her. We never parted without these words "We love you guys."
